R.E.
At Leigh Beck Academy, we are proud of our RE curriculum. RE is taught weekly, generally as a stand-alone lesson, but occasionally linked to our year group topics (where it fits). In every year group we learn about, and build on our knowledge and understanding of Christianity, and then we learn about concepts across one other major religion. This prevents children from getting religions and their ideals muddled. To support us with this we use the scheme of work, Discovery RE which provides us with detailed medium term plans and additional resources. We then use these medium-term plans to create more detailed lesson plans that are tailored to the children that we teach.
Discovery RE brings together learning about and from religion, questioning and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. Teaching strategies are varied and are mindful of preferred learning styles and the need for differentiation. Each enquiry starts from the children’s own life experiences using these as a bridge into the investigation of the religion being studied. They then evaluate their own learning at the end of the enquiry and use their understanding to express their ideas, based on a key question, posed at the beginning of the unit.
